Why High-Security Lock Installation Is a Different Job Entirely
Swapping a standard deadbolt for a Medeco or Mul-T-Lock is not a drop-in replacement. Both brands engineer their cylinders to tighter tolerances than commodity locks, which means the mortise cutout, the strike-plate depth, and the backset alignment all need to be measured and, when necessary, adjusted before the new hardware seats correctly. A rushed installation that ignores these tolerances can leave micro-gaps that compromise the very pick and bump resistance you paid for. Our locksmiths arrive with calibrated drill guides, carbide-tipped bits, and brand-specific installation templates so that every deadbolt lock installation we complete holds to the manufacturer's specifications — and to your door's actual dimensions.
Medeco cylinders use a patented rotating-pin and sidebar mechanism that makes standard pick tools ineffective. Mul-T-Lock's telescoping-pin technology adds a second independent locking row, raising the pick-resistance even further. Both systems also enforce strict key control: keys cannot be duplicated at a hardware store or a kiosk; copies require either original authorization cards or direct contact with the manufacturer's distribution chain. For Upper West Side households with housekeepers, dog walkers, or short-term renters, that key-control feature alone is often worth the upgrade.
